Why Fall Cleanup Matters More Than You Think

1. Scoop Before You Rake

Always pick up waste before raking or blowing leaves. Raking first grinds waste into the lawn and spreads bacteria across the whole yard. Walk the yard in sections, then rake once it's clear.

If the yard has been neglected for a while, a one-time deep cleanup is the fastest reset — a full top-to-bottom sweep, including corners, fence lines, and under decks and shrubs.

2. Don't Compost Dog Waste

Dog waste is not like leaves or grass clippings. It can carry roundworms, hookworms, giardia, and parvo, and home compost piles rarely get hot enough to kill them. Keep it out of your compost and out of municipal yard-waste bins unless your township explicitly allows it.

3. Watch the Wet Spots
